ABOUT JOHN LEAHY

UPDATE:  I have come to terms with the Florence Freedom to broadcast their games for the 2010 season. All Freedom games are broadcast on 106.7 FM WNKR and online at  www.1067WNKR.com.  I am excited to be a part of such a professional organization as the Freedom.

John Leahy is a  broadcasting professional with fifteen years of play-by-play experience in the sports field.  He is currently the voice of Merrimack College ice hockey as well as the Florence Freedom professional baseball club . Merrimack College, located in North Andover MA, competes with nine other colleges including Boston College, Boston University, Northeastern, New Hampshire, Vermont, Providence, UMass Lowell, UMass (Amherst), and Maine, to form Hockey East, the most elite college hockey conference in the world today. During the 2005-06 season John appeared on ESPNU as a rinkside reporter at a Merrimack home game against the Maine Black Bears. Merrimack hockey broadcasts can be heard live here.  The Florence Freedom play in the Frontier League of professional baseball and play in a twelve team league, with franchises in Michigan, Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Indiana.

In 2008 and 2009, John provided the voice-overs for Boston's prestigious Shattuck Awards, an annual media event that is one of Boston's premier award shows

John was also  the voice of Merrimack College men's and women's basketball in the 2006-2007 season, broadcasting the home games over the Internet on ne-10.tv, a pay-per-view online Internet site, and the official webcasting home of the Northeast-10 conference.

On November 27, 2007, John was behind the mike for his first ever Division 1 basketball game at the Dunkin Donuts Center in Providence, RI, as the Maine Black Bears took on the Providence Friars. He filled in on WVOM, the Maine radio station, as a replacement for the regular play-by-play announcer, Ron Lisnet.

From 2005-2007, John was the voice of the North Shore Spirit  baseball team in the Can-Am Professional Baseball League, based in Lynn, MA. They competed with the Brockton Rox, the Quebec City Capitales, the Nashua Pride, the Worcester Tornadoes, the New Haven County Cutters, the New Jersey Jackals, the Sussex County (NJ) Skyhawks, the Atlantic City Surf, and the Can-Am Grays. The games were aired on 1510 AM (The Zone) in Boston.

John has also done play-by-play for the Yawkey League of Boston on the Comcast television network. The Yawkey League is comprised of collegiate level baseball teams located in the metropolitan Boston area with franchises blanketing the entire metro region.

John's initial broadcast experiences were rooted in high school play-by-play, covering Stoughton (MA) High School hockey,  football, and basketball for ten years. He's also covered sports in the Massachusetts towns of Mansfield, Canton, Brookline, and Saugus, for community access local cable. He is a long standing member of the American Sportscasters Association as well as the Sportscasters Talent Agency of America.
