PHILOSOPHY OF SPORTS BROADCASTING

My philosophy of sports broadcasting is that announcers need to present the action in such a way as to inform, educate, and entertain their audience. A broadcaster should use objective and fair reporting based on detailed and systematic preparation and become adept at story telling, particularly on the radio. Creativity is critical, especially  for radio announcing. The radio announcer is like an artist using a magic paint brush... the goal is to verbally paint vivid pictures in the listeners mind, making them feel as though they are right there at the stadium with the announcer. This is done by describing everything as it relates to the event- the wind conditions, stadium conditions, uniforms, weather, crowd activity, and any other information that enhances the listening experience. The TV announcer relies less on this creative form because he has cameras and graphics to aid in telling the story.

On a personal level, you should check your ego at the door. The game is the story, not the announcer. Having the ability to relate well with people is crucial to your success as a broadcaster. You will work with many people at the game site...never put yourself above anyone. It is best to develop an attitude of gratitude, no matter what event you are covering.

I also believe in following up after a broadcast and critiquing your performance. There is tremendous value in this process, because it is here one can learn how to get better through constructive feedback. Every broadcast presents a new opportunity for growth and learning.
